As Europe advances toward its ambitious environmental goals under the Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters, scaling up lake restoration efforts is essential. The FutureLakes initiative focuses on identifying where nature-based solutions (NbS) and circular blue economy solutions (CBS) can be replicated across Europe’s large lake basins, while strengthening the capacity needed to implement these measures in different regions.
By transferring knowledge between regions and building on lessons from existing restoration projects, FutureLakes supports the transition from local pilot initiatives to coordinated, large-scale lake restoration across Europe. This approach promotes evidence-based decision-making and helps maximise environmental, social, and economic benefits as part of the Mission’s deployment and upscaling phase (2026–2030).
