Building the Evidence Base

FutureLakes reviews innovative lake restoration techniques through a structured literature review and expert input from scientists and practitioners.

This work assesses the technical performance, operational requirements, and wider environmental benefits of different restoration measures, with a particular focus on:

  • Nature-based Solutions (NbS): Actions to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems, that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits (Cohen-Shacham et al. 2016).
  • Biodiversity-focused Solutions (BfS): Solutions focused primarily on biodiversity restoration that may include established restoration measures implemented in innovative ways.
  • Circular Blue economy Solutions (CBS): Actions that include efficient recovery of resources by integrating circular economy principles into the bioeconomy.

The resulting catalogue of restoration measures supports lake managers, practitioners and policymakers in identifying suitable solutions for protecting and restoring lakes. Read the full report:
