Working Together for the Future of Voroklini Lake

FutureLakes partners recently visited Larnaka, Cyprus, to engage with local stakeholders working to protect and restore Voroklini Lake, an important Natura 2000 site and a valuable freshwater ecosystem.

Hosted by the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) in collaboration with Larnaka Municipality, the two-day event took place on 3–4 June 2026 as part of the IVIS (Initiative for Voroklini Lake Integrated Sustainability) project, a cascading grant funded through FutureLakes.

The visit brought together representatives from FutureLakes partner IRIDRA, local authorities, environmental organisations, researchers, and lake managers to exchange knowledge on current management practices and discuss opportunities for the co-development of an updated management plan for Voroklini Lake.

Through presentations, stakeholder discussions, and a site visit to the lake, participants explored both the challenges and opportunities associated with conserving and enhancing this unique wetland ecosystem. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration among local and regional actors while identifying pathways to support long-term ecological sustainability.

A key outcome of the event was the reaffirmation of a shared commitment to protecting and restoring Voroklini Lake through integrated, science-based approaches. The visit also highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement in developing effective restoration strategies that address local needs while supporting biodiversity conservation and ecosystem resilience.

As a FutureLakes associated region, Voroklini Lake provides an important opportunity to demonstrate how innovative restoration planning, nature-based solutions, and collaborative governance can contribute to healthier freshwater ecosystems.
