Welcoming Our Associated Regions to FutureLakes
We are delighted to welcome three Associated Regions to the FutureLakes project:
- Lead partner: Larnaka Municipality (LM)
- Key stakeholder: The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI)
- Lead partner: Limerick City & County Council
- Key stakeholder: LAWPRO, MRT, Mary Immaculate College
- Lead partner: Basin Department of Water Resources of Zakhidnyi Buh and Sian Rivers
- Key stakeholder: Shatsk National Natural Park
These regions join FutureLakes with a shared commitment to restoring lake ecosystems through nature-based and circular economy solutions. Their inclusion marks a significant step in expanding the project’s reach and impact across Europe.
Each region brings unique ecological and cultural contexts:
Voroklini Lake is a reconstructed ex-dried lake in Cyprus, part of the Natura 2000 network. Restoration efforts will focus on biodiversity protection, tackling eutrophication, and promoting eco-tourism.
Lough Gur, in County Limerick, Ireland, is a shallow eutrophic lake with high phosphorus levels and recurring algal blooms. Restoration will target nutrient reduction and community engagement, while preserving its rich archaeological heritage.
Svitiaz Lake, Ukraine’s deepest lake, lies within the Shatsk National Nature Park. Known for its pristine waters and biodiversity, it faces challenges from eutrophication and sedimentation. FutureLakes will support sustainable tourism and ecological recovery.
These Associated Regions will co-develop tailored action plans, benefit from technical expertise, and contribute to knowledge exchange across the consortium. Together, we aim to restore biodiversity, improve water quality, and foster resilient communities around Europe’s lakes.
Welcome aboard!
