FutureLakes project meeting in Gdańsk, Poland

From 24–26 March, the FutureLakes consortium came together in Gdańsk, Poland, for a productive and engaging project meeting. It was a great opportunity to meet in person, reconnect across teams, and dive into discussions that will shape the next phases of the project.

Sharing progress and ideas

The first day focused on progress across the project. All work packages presented key highlights, giving a valuable overview of how the project is developing. We also heard updates from several of the lake demonstration sites and associated regions, offering insights into local challenges and solutions. An important part of the day was dedicated to the FutureLakes Knowledge Hub, where partners provided feedback on its development. The day ended on a high note with a formal dinner, where participants enjoyed traditional Polish cuisine and continued conversations in a relaxed setting.

Visiting the Kartuzy lake demo site

On the second day, participants visited the Kartuzy lake demo site. Renata and Natalia shared the history of the lake and the work being done there. The group also received a warm welcome from the Mayor of Kartuzy, Mieczysław Grzegorz Gołuński. The visit included a closer look at ongoing measures, including sediment dredging at the local wastewater treatment facility—an important effort to improve water quality. The day combined learning, discussion, and on-the-ground insights into lake restoration work.

Looking ahead together

The final day brought together perspectives from all associated regions. It was especially valuable to have teams from Ukraine and Cyprus present in person, while colleagues from Ireland joined digitally.

A workshop explored measures at both national and EU levels, encouraging discussion on how to scale solutions and strengthen collaboration. The meeting concluded with a forward-looking session, as Laurence outlined the next steps for the project and thanked everyone for their contributions. Overall, everyone agreed it was a productive and fruitful meeting.
