FutureLakes at the Mission Ocean & Waters Forum 2026

The FutureLakes team made a strong impression at the Mission Ocean and Waters Annual Forum on 5th March in Brussels, joining the Mission Lakes community to highlight Europe’s growing efforts to protect and restore freshwater ecosystems.

A crowd favorite was the playful yet educational “Fish for Freshwater Facts” activity, where participants uncovered surprising stories about Europe’s freshwater dependent species—including the elusive pond bat and the critically threatened European eel. The team had a great time talking with everyone who came by the stand.

FutureLakes helped create a great interactive exhibition booth together with our sister projects FERRO, ProCleanLakes and EUROLakes. The IDEATIOn project was also part of the booth. They’re an EU project developing a digital “twin” of inland waters to better manage and protect rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Visitors learned how the projects are advancing innovative monitoring tools, ecosystem restoration strategies, and data-driven solutions for healthier lakes by 2030.
